The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

As any major honors show draws close, one notices a clamor for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of fans with niche passions.

Another commentator has already made for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing above others. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles published annually lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category in 2014
  • Another creative title missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of logic titles barely qualified for niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles in the world and have been for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. One could readily select a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
