Approximately fifty cars have been covered with what appears to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postal boxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they stated in a statement.
Police say they were contacted late on Wednesday, when a man discovered that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored fluid.
The substance had been applied in the shape of a swastika, they reported.
Law enforcement then located numerous other smeared vehicles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under legislation outlawing the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police state initial examinations show the substance was probably blood from a person.
"Currently there is no clue as to its source; investigators are currently not aware of any injuries in relation with the incident," they commented.
Municipal representatives said they were attempting "to solve the case" and have asked to the residents for tips.
An important official stated the incident made him without words and had to be solved promptly.
"This act hits the center of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the far-right violent incident half a decade ago," he wrote on social media, recalling the killing of nine people by a gunman aiming at people of foreign heritage in February 2020.
